The
Trading Post used to be in the front of the Commissary Building, where
the kitchen is now. It was called
"Jackson's Emporium",
named in honor of its long time director, Dick
Jackson. If you look carefully you can still see the name on the wall.

The
commissary was fully open inside and a lot of food was stored there.
Food was distributed by the commissary staff to most of the Scout units
who prepared their own meals in their campsites. This was a process
known as Jamboree Dining. The camp offices and the Cage now take up
space.
A large picnic area was
in front of the old Trading Post. A big
bar-be-cue pit was located there where Friday's dinner was
prepared and served to the whole camp. The bar-be-cue pit was also used
for special dinners on staffs' day off or the staff banquet at the end
of the year.

The
picture to the right was probably taken on a weekend, when only staff
were fed. The Program Dirctor Lee Thompson is talking to his son
Dave.
The doctor and his family is seated
in the foreground.

The
old kitchen and dining area was located in what is now the Handicraft
Area. A new building facade and slab replaced the old.
At one time
Whitsett fed only about one-fourth the camp and the staff in this
dining facility (the rest ate Jamboree Dining).

One
of the greatest Staff past times in '79 was Volleyball! The court
was
just off the dining area, and Staff would take up a game at anytime.
Some Staff took the fun WAY too seriously, but many games were played
on this court.

For
several years members of the Highland Band of Granada Hills High School
were members of Camp Staff. They brought their Scottish kilts and such
and Bag Pipes. At one time we had three pipers on staff! Whitsett
was probably the only camps who had Pipers at our campfires.
Here staff members
are Clowning Around with one of the pipers.

It was nice finding
old pictures
and reminiscing.
If you have
any old
pictures,
make sure to get them on
to
Chuck Smith to be added
to the Whitsett Pages.
